Exadata: Need at least x.x gb space on / partition of cells to do cell update (Doc ID 1639590.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 22, 2014

Applies to:

Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software - Version 11.2.3.1.1 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

While preparing for an upcoming update to the software on the Exadata Storage Cells, the pre-checks have indicated that there is not enough space on the / partition of the Storage Cells to do cell update:

For example:

 # Need at least 4.2 gb space on / partition of cells to do cell update
cel01: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
cel01: /dev/md5 9.9G 7.3G 2.2G 78% /
cel02: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
cel02: /dev/md5 9.9G 7.3G 2.2G 78% /
cel03: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
cel03: /dev/md5 9.9G 7.3G 2.2G 78% /
cel04: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
cel04: /dev/md5 9.9G 7.3G 2.2G 78% /
cel05: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
cel05: /dev/md5 9.9G 7.3G 2.2G 78% /
cel06: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
cel06: /dev/md5 9.9G 7.3G 2.2G 78% /
cel07: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
cel07: /dev/md5 9.9G 7.3G 2.2G 78% /

The message may also read other values, such as:

Need at least 3.0 gb space on / partition of cells to do cell update

This is because the space requirement is the size of the ISO file being used plus 1.5GB. For the Oct2013 update that value was 4.2GB. For the Jan-July2014 updates, only 3.0GB was needed.
