Creating Index With Algorithm Inplace Not Working After Upgrading To MySQL 5.6, getting "Cannot change column type INPLACE" error (Doc ID 1671440.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 07, 2016

Applies to:

MySQL Server - Version 5.6 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

After upgrading to 5.6, I am unable to create an index online. It appears to be on tables with a datetime column, which might be because of the new datetime format. However it is confusing that I get a "Cannot change column type INPLACE" error when adding an index.

mysql root@localhost:test > ALTER TABLE t2 ADD INDEX `c2` (`c2`), ALGORITHM=INPLACE;
ERROR 1846 (0A000): ALGORITHM=INPLACE is not supported. Reason: Cannot change column type INPLACE. Try ALGORITHM=COPY.
