Creating Index With Algorithm Inplace Not Working After Upgrading To MySQL 5.6, getting "Cannot change column type INPLACE" error

After upgrading to 5.6, I am unable to create an index online. It appears to be on tables with a datetime column, which might be because of the new datetime format. However it is confusing that I get a "Cannot change column type INPLACE" error when adding an index.
