How to disable HDFS Snapshots on Oracle BDA V4.*.

Due to Jira: HDFS-6908 disabling HDFS Snapshots may be required as HDFS-6908 can cause the fsimage to be corrupted.  Once the fsimage is corrupted,  restarting a NameNode will raise: NullPointerException. See: Restarting a NameNode on the BDA Fails with "FATAL namenode.NameNode: Exception in namenode join java.lang.NullPointerException". (Doc ID 2002790.1).  HDFS-6908 is fixed in CDH 5.1.3 and 5.2.0 (BDA V4.1) and higher.

Note: For BDA V4.0 and lower:

  • Disable HDFS Snapshots when upgrading from CDH 5.1.2 (BDA V4.0) and earlier versions.
  • Due to HDFD-6908 the recommendation is to disable HDFS Snapshots in CDH versions prior to CDH 5.1.3 which is BDA V4.0 and lower.
