ORA-07445 [qcplgte_multibyte()+242] Error For Oracle Net Client Session (Doc ID 2003930.1)

Trying to create a spatial index, it kills the session saying

SQL Error: No more data to read from socket.

The alert log shows an ORA-07445:

ORA-07445: exception encountered: core dump [qcplgte_multibyte()+242] [SIGSEGV] [ADDR:0x7FFF8E668F78] [PC:0xBE29182] [Address not mapped to object] []

The trace file shows information like:

o  A "call" statement like above is rather unusual to fail on. The ADDR argument value of the exception is also unusual as this looks like a stack frame address.

o  When we try the operation directly from a sqlplus session on the server, this works fine, 

o  Checking ulimit shows next results:
