Exalytics and Oracle In-Memory Database: Query Performance and Hard Parse Times Longer than Expected

When using Oracle Database In-Memory (IMDB) on an Oracle Exalytics server, the query performance is less than expected.
For example, if setting optimizer_features_enable:

Setting it to optimizer_features_enable='' improves query performance (< 1 second).
Resetting it to optimizer_features_enable='' slows query performance (7 - 10 seconds)

Expecting performance to be better with than it is with, but explain plan shows longer time in the hard parse phase.
