Symptoms

Modification of ASM spfile fails with below error.

SQL> alter system set processes=500 sid='*' scope=spfile;
alter system set processes=500 sid='*' scope=spfile
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-32000: write to SPFILE requested but SPFILE is not modifiable
