ASMFD Configuration Error - ASMCMD-9519: ASMLib is present with ASM disk string 'ORCL:*'

Symptoms
Attempted to configure ASMFD and got the following error:
# $GRID_HOME/bin/asmcmd afd_configure
ASMCMD-9519: ASMLib is present with ASM disk string 'ORCL:*,AFD:*'; command requires default ASM disk string
Then tried stopping ASMLib
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm stop
Dropping Oracle ASMLib disks: [ OK ]
Shutting down the Oracle ASMLib driver: [ OK ]
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm status
Checking if ASM is loaded: no
Checking if /dev/oracleasm is mounted: no
And re-attempted to configure ASMFD but see the same error:
# $GRID_HOME/bin/asmcmd afd_configure
ASMCMD-9519: ASMLib is present with ASM disk string 'ORCL:*,AFD:*'; command requires default ASM disk string
Changes
Recently upgraded to 12.1.0.2 and are trying to migrate the existing ASMLib devices to ASMFD.
