Java Application for HBase Will Not Connect To Zookeeper - getting SASL Error (Doc ID 2140606.1)

Symptoms

On BDA 4.4.0, when trying to connect to HBase using java code, the java code is able to connect but raises the error below when trying to look at tables. There seems to be an authentication issue between HBase and Zookeeper.
