EUS connection fails with ORA-28030 when using an F5 load balancer

An Oracle database has been configured to use Oracle Unified Directory (OUD) for EUS authentication.
One wishes to put a F5 load balancer in between the directory and the database server, so that the database server's ldap.ora can point to a virtual IP.
However, after making this change, connecting to the database as an EUS-authenticated user fails with:
A third-party (F5) load balancer has been configured in ldap.ora to handle traffic in between the database and the OUD proxy servers.
EUS works as expected when the load balancer is taken out of the picture.
