Oracle Big Data Appliance Base Image Version 4.5.0 for New Installations or Reprovisioning Existing Installations on Oracle Linux 6 (Doc ID 2173434.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 03, 2021

Applies to:

Big Data Appliance Integrated Software - Version 4.5.0 and later
Linux x86-64

Purpose

This document provides details for re-imaging the Oracle Big Data Appliance Base Image to version 4.5.0. The document describes the steps on how to re-image a single server or an entire Oracle Big Data Appliance or a cluster of BDA servers.

Note:  This BDA Base Image can only be used for reimaging.  It does not contain a rescue image (and should not be used on a node that is down unless the goal is to reimage).  In other words this base image can not be used to boot a node, only to reimage a node.

Scope

NOTE: In the examples that follow, user details, cluster names, hostnames, directory paths, filenames, etc. represent a fictitious sample (and are used to provide an illustrative example only). Any similarity to actual persons, or entities, living or dead, is purely coincidental and not intended in any manner.

This information is intended to be used by field support or a system administrator when re-imaging the Oracle Big Data Appliance , Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2, Oracle Big Data Appliance X4-2, Oracle Big Data Appliance X5-2, or Oracle Big Data Appliance X6-2 to version 4.5.0.

This is for new installs where the installed Base Image is older than BDA v4.2.0 or or for reprovisioning existing installations where it is desired to wipe the existing cluster to install a new one.

New BDAs shipping from the factory now have Base Image 4.5.0. Reimaging to 4.5.0 is not necessary in this case and is only necessary if the Base Image installed is older than v4.2.0.

It is recommended to re-image to the latest BDA 4.5.0 on a machine that came from factory with a release version older than 4.2.0, as the 4.5.0 image will install a recent version of Oracle Linux 6 with UEK v2.

However when configuring new racks that shipped with a base image lower than 4.5.0 but on which 4.5.0 will be installed and hence on which the BDA 4.5.0 configuration utility will be used, you need to follow: Network Configuration Instructions for Shipped BDA racks with a BDA Base Image Less Than V4.5.0 (Doc ID 2135358.1).

Upgrades of existing clusters running on Oracle Linux 5 will continue to run Oracle Linux 5. This is because Oracle Linux does not offer an upgrade path from OL5 to OL6.

Note: A new BDA Base Image v4.5.0-7 for Oracle Linux 6 has been released for reimaging BDA servers in the field. This image supersedes all earlier released BDA v4.5.0 Base Image releases for Oracle Linux 6.

This image adds support for the new network configuration files, adds support for LAG/LACP, adds new ILOM firmware and fixes the bug with reimaging servers with 4 GB USB drives.

To verify the correct version is used run the following:
