Purpose

This article is intended to help troubleshoot intermittently slow IO under the database.  Iostat fields are often misinterpretted.  This article explains how key iostat metrics work, including summarizing their algorithms.  This helps DBAs and engineers to understand correlation with other tiers such as database in order to align with AWR reports, etc.
