Symptoms

MySQL fails to start after the following sequence of steps:

  1. Install MySQL
  2. Initialize MySQL (mysqld --initialize or mysql_install_db)
  3. Change the value of innodb_data_file_path in the MySQL configuration file.
  4. Attempt to start the mysqld service

If MySQL is started using systemd, the output from systemctl will be similar to:
