Symptoms

While applying a one off patch or a PSU following error may occur during the relinking phase:

Patching component oracle.rdbms.dbscripts, 12.1.0.2.0...
Make failed to invoke "/usr/bin/make -f ins_ctx.mk ictxhx ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/12.1.0.2"....'/usr/local/bin/ld: cannot find -lz
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [ctxhx] Error 1



The following make actions have failed :

Re-link fails on target "ictxhx".
