Cannot Run Oracle Audit Vault Backup As User Oracle (Doc ID 2278768.1)

Last updated on MARCH 29, 2019

Applies to:

Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall - Version and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Following Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall Administrator's Guide 12.2, Step 3: Validate the Backup
In this section, Step 2 says to "switch to user oracle"
When I execute Step 3 and issue the command /var/lib/oracle/dbfw/bin/avbackup validate
I get message:
Backup/Restore requires root privileges.
Please log on as root and re-issue the command.

Further, if I try to run the command /var/lib/oracle/dbfw/bin/avbackup restore as user root, I get permission denied errors on reading the backup set.

Note: I am using an NFS export as my backup destination.

So I am left in a dilemma, only user oracle has permission on the backup files, and only root has permission to run the avbackup script. What is the recommended procedure to remedy this situation? Currently, I am running the scripts as root, but switching to oracle to issue a chmod command on the backup files.
