Symptoms

Performing the Database Upgrade. Receiving the following message :

SummarizableStep.executeImpl:240] Failed to start the database in upgrade mode.
oracle.assistants.dbua.backend.DBUpgradeStep.executeStepImpl(DBUpgradeStep.java:169)

Process ID: 0
LRM-00101: unknown parameter name '_exafusion_enabled'
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
select status from v$instance

Changes

During upgrade dbua shows a prereq failure asking user to drop all _params (i.e., hidden init params).   If the user drops the params from spfile and continues the upgrade using dbua without bouncing the database, database instance fails to start up in upgrade mode.
