Symptoms

After a loss of network connectivity between hosts on the cluster HBase is showing the following errors:

ERROR: org.apache.hadoop.hbase.NotServingRegionException: Region metadata ... is not online on <HOSTNAME>.<DOMAIN>
at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.regionserver.HRegionServer.getRegionByEncodedName(HRegionServer.java:2921)
at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.regionserver.RSRpcServices.getRegion(RSRpcServices.java:1053)
at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.regionserver.RSRpcServices.scan(RSRpcServices.java:2384)
