Goal

This article covers a simple upgrade from Grid Infrastructure 12.1.0.2 to 12.2.0.1. The documentation provides several details concerning prerequisites and potential problems that might be encountered.  The documented steps can be found at the following documentation link:

https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/oracle-database/12.2/cwlin/upgrading-oracle-grid-infrastructure.html#GUID-DF76F201-3374-486F-9D19-06276764569F

The main change associated with the upgrade to 12.2.0.1 is that the runInstaller is no longer used to do the upgrade. Instead, the upgrade is performed by creating a directory that will be a new Grid home and the gold image for the software distribution is unzipped into the directory.  There are a number of advantages to this strategy, especially the ability to patch prior to setting up the software, and ultimately create a gold image of the patched up distribution that can be utilized in other upgrades.

The steps to create the new directory home and unzip the software distribution are covered at the following documentation link:

Note: Refer to <Document:1410202.1> for information on applying patch(es) prior to starting upgrade
