Create Diskgroup Fails with ORA-15057 on AIX (Doc ID 2396167.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 04, 2018

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version to [Release 11.2 to 12.2]
IBM AIX on POWER Systems (64-bit)

On AIX, diskgroup creation with external redundancy fails as follows :

SQL> create diskgroup DATA external redundancy disk '/dev/rhdisk5' size 500G;
create diskgroup DATA external redundancy disk '/dev/rhdisk5' size 500G
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-15018: diskgroup cannot be created
ORA-15057: specified size of 512000 MB is larger than actual size of 64000 MB

In the error message ASM reports that the actual size is 64000MB however the actual size on OS is 500GB

grid@NODE1:/asm/grid $ getconf DISK_SIZE /dev/hdisk5

 If we don't specify the size clause then the create diskgroup command will succeed but the TOTAL_MB of the disk will be lesser than than the OS_MB

 Creating new diskgroup with disk physical block size is something other than 512 (e.g. 4096)
