MySQL Server - Version 8.0 and later Information in this document applies to any platform.
Disclaimer: Starting from v8.0, some terms have been deprecated. Older releases will only use the deprecated terminology, and new releases will only use new terminology. Please see https://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysqld-version-reference/en/ for a complete list of those changes, and in which minor versions it happened.
Using MySQL 8.0 and a replication user that is using the default authentication plugin on the replication source (the caching_sha2_password authentication plugin), the replication I/O thread fails to start with the error:
Note that the replication is not using SSL.
The issue may appear to be intermittent, for example replication starts working after manually connecting from the host with the replication replica to the replication source using the mysql command-line client with the same credentials as the replication. Then after restarting the replication source, the replication stops working again.
The issue happens after installing MySQL Server 8.0.
