Unified And/Or Traditional Auditing Inserts Waiting On GC FREELIST (In ASSM Tablespace) (Doc ID 2596033.1)

Last updated on APRIL 17, 2023

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 12.2.0.1 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Unified Auditing and Traditional Auditing are both waiting for 'gc freelist'.

Sessions may be blocked by either:

A) insert into sys.aud$ (the Traditional Audit Trail)

B) insert into audsys.aud$unified (the Unified Audit Trail)

Hanganalyze shows 'gc freelist wait' (even when all other RAC nodes are shut down).

Symptoms are similar to: INSERT INTO SYS.AUD$ Is Blocking Due to Waiting on 'gc freelist' (Doc ID 2207798.1); however, the database is using ASSM (automatic segment-space management) for the SYSAUX tablespace which holds both AUD$ and AUD$UNIFIED, so the Note is not applicable in this case.

The problem is not limited to mixed-mode (traditional) or unified auditing.  With auditing disabled, the issue persists with the same symptoms -- waiting for 'gc freelist' -- for queries that do not involve any audit trail.
