Before the upgrade to 12cR1, the RMAN backups were running without errors with the following database parameters being set:

 _backup_disk_bufsz=1048576
 _backup_disk_bufcnt=64
 _backup_file_bufsz=1048576
 _backup_file_bufcnt=64
