Frequently Asked Questions
Release 19.13

Is applying one-off patches for Oracle Grid Infrastructure and database supported on Oracle Database Appliance?
Yes. However, these patches may need to be manually rolled back when applying the next Oracle Database Appliance patch bundle.
Rollback is required when the one-off patches are not present in the Oracle Database Appliance patch bundled being applied.
In such cases, another one-off patch on the new base release must be requested and applied.

Just as is supported for Oracle Database on Oracle Database Appliance, can a new Oracle Grid Infrastructure RU be applied out of cycle?
No.

From the below document reference, it can be seen that generic patches should not be applied to the GI_HOME manually.

Caution:Do not patch Oracle Database Appliance using generic patches for Oracle Grid Infrastructure or Oracle Linux.
Also do not use individual infrastructure patches, such as firmware patches. You must only use Oracle Database Appliance patches.
If you use patches that are not intended for Oracle Database Appliance, or if you use OPatch, or a similar patching tool,
then the metadata maintained by Oracle Database Appliance is not updated, and you cannot complete future patch updates.
If you apply out-of-cycle Oracle Database Release Update (RU), then ensure that you also follow the recommendations described in the Readme for the RU.

However, Doc ID 1463638.1 states that one-off patches can be applied if required.

Oracle Database Appliance FAQ (Doc ID 1463638.1)

What is the software patching process for the Oracle Database Appliance?

The Oracle Database Appliance development team provides one-button patches specifically to upgrade Oracle Database Appliance firmware, OS, Grid Infrastructure, and Database PSUs.
You should never apply any patches to the firmware, OS, or Grid Infrastructure unless directed by Oracle Support.
If an Oracle database one-off patch is required, you may apply it.
