NetworkManager.service and network.service in Exadata, ZDLRA, and other Exadata based systems (Doc ID 3050134.1)

Last updated on NOVEMBER 26, 2024

Applies to:

Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software - Version N/A to 24.1.4.0.0
Linux x86
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

Various network interface failures.
Symptoms can range from interfaces not coming up, to not being able to create bonding interfaces. Sometimes KVM bridges do not form in the KVM Host (Dom0). Sometimes static routes are lost, or not created.

Changes

Upgrade from Exadata Software version 22.1.0.0.0 (OL7) to 23.1.0.0.0 (OL8) or an upgrade from Linux 7 to Linux 8. NetworkManager.service is an advancement (and replacement) for the network.service in Linux. NetworkManager.service does not always use the configuration files used by network.service (configuring NetworkManager is not covered in this note). NetworkManager.service can be configured to co-exist with the network.service with each properly controlling the interfaces. This is a configuration useful during the transition from network.service to NetworkManager.service.
