Ora-4031 "Shared Pool", "Select ..", "Sql Area" With Cursor_space_for_time True (Doc ID 311245.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 04, 2018

Applies to:

Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 10.1.0.1 to 10.1.0.3
This problem can occur on any platform.
Checked for relevance on 25-Oct-2007.

Symptoms

ORA-4031 errors frequently and users are having locking / hanging problems. The ORA-4031 errors show SQL AREA.

i.e.

ORA-04031: unable to allocate 4000 bytes of shared memory ("shared pool","select audit$,options from p...","sql area","seg:kggfaAllocSeg")

ORA-04031: unable to allocate 4096 bytes of shared memory ("shared pool","SELECT EVENT_CASE_ID FROM ...","sql area","kgghteInit")

Looking in the ORA-4031 trace shows (in this example) 400MB allocated to SQL AREA which was the bulk of all shared pool allocation.

Changes

cursor_space_for_time = true (non-default setting)
