Connect Fails With ORA-00603 Oracle Server Session Terminated (Doc ID 338484.1)

Last updated on MARCH 04, 2022

Applies to:

Oracle Provider for OLE DB - Version 10.2.0.1.0 and later
Microsoft Windows (32-bit)

Symptoms

When trying to connect to 10.2.0.1 server using the Oracle Provider for OLE DB (for example using a test.UDL file ) you receive the following error:

ORA-603 Oracle server session terminated by fatal error.

A simple VBS script to connect also fails with the same error.

SQL*Net Client trace shows

"  ORA-00603: ORACLE server session terminated by fatal error
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 52
ORA-00036: maximum number of recursive SQL levels (50) exceeded
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 52
ORA-00036: maximum number of$ recursive SQL levels (50) exceeded
"

However, the connect succeeds when using:

  • Same client when connecting to a 9.2.0.4 Database Server
  • Microsoft Provider for OLEDB for Oracle driver
  • SQLPLUS from this 10.2 client
  • Oracle ODBC driver
