Client upgrade from Veritas 4.5 to 5.1 on Oracle 8.1.6 AIX not successful

After upgrading ( shutdown, relink and restart ) the Veritas Netbackup Client from 4.5 to 5.1 on the database servers, the Oracle 126.96.36.199 databases is working as expected - the new 5.1 client is being used. However, the Oracle 8.1.6 database running on AIX is still using the 4.5 client even after the upgrade process was completed.
What could have caused this to happen?
