To help troubleshoot database link (dblink) when Oracle Internet Directory(OID) is used for naming resolution.

Limitation is that we cannot use "." in creating the nets service name in Oracle Internet Directory (OID) as the character conflicts with the context set for domain.

For example, if you make the net service name as, the "world" here would not be part of the net service alias, but would be a domain (context).

If the database link is from 9i to you will not be able to use commands against the database link.
