Symptoms
When attempting to perform a manual migration of an 8.1.7.4 database to 10.1.0.3, STARTUP UPGRADE fails:
When compatible = 10.0.0:
SQL> STARTUP UPGRADE
ORA-00401: the value for parameter compatible is not supported by this release
When compatible = 8.1.7.4.0:
SQL> STARTUP UPGRADE
ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 247261064 bytes
Fixed Size 100232 bytes
Variable Size 226402304 bytes
Database Buffers 20480000 bytes
Redo Buffers 278528 bytes
Database mounted.
ORA-02288: invalid OPEN mode
SP2-1500: STARTUP with UPGRADE only valid with Oracle 9.2 or greater
