Symptoms
The Oracle ASM Database instance reports error ORA-15186 in the alert.log, for example:
The error occurs periodically, most notably during ASM instance startup and as a result of V$ASM_... view queries, as well as during RMAN backup.
The error may occur regardless of whether raw devices are used for oracleasm disks or not.
Despite the error, however, no adverse impact or affects are observed.
Changes
Variables likely to result in the error include:
- Oracle ASM database instance parameter asm_diskstring is unset
- Oracle ASM database instance parameter asm_diskstring was recently modified to include devices or directories that it has no privilege to access
