Queries That Access a Local Synonym Which Points to a Remote Database Error With ORA-03106 or ORA-03020 Two-Task Errors (Doc ID 416857.1)

Symptoms

After applying an interim patch to an Oracle Home on a Unix or Linux server, a query that had previously worked begins failing with:

ORA-03106 "fatal two-task communication protocol error" and / or
ORA-03120 "two-task conversion routine: integer overflow" errors.

The query selects from a local synonym, which in turn selects from a remote table via a database link.
