Symptoms

Attempts to connect locally to the database using SQLPLUS hang. SQLPLUS launches successfully (i.e. sqlplus /nolog), however attempting to connect to the database from within SQLPLUS hangs.

A system call trace of the SQLPLUS client process (e.g. using strace, truss) denotes the following output:

Quest Vintela Authentication Services (VAS) and Vintela Group Policy (VGP) were recently implemented within the environment. VAS/VGP are third-party authentication software, a description of which is available from http://www.vintela.com.
