Connecting as SYS/passwd@ AS SYSDBA To A Database In NOMOUNT Status Fails With ORA-01031 (Doc ID 438138.1)

Symptoms

With an Oracle 10.2.0.3 database on Sun SPARC Solaris 64-bit, which is started NOMOUNT the following error occurs:

sqlplus sys/<password>@<db_alias> as sysdba
ERROR
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges



By contrast, the following commands DO connect successfully:

sqlplus / as sysdba
sqlplus sys/<password>
sqlplus sys/<password>@<db_alias>



Under these circumstances, when issuing CREATE PFILE FROM SPFILE, the following messages are also generated:

ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
SVR4 Error: 25: Inappropriate ioctl for device
