Java tool (OWM, NETCA, NETMGA, NETCA, DBCA, OUI, etc) fails to display or hangs

When starting one of the Java based management tools (OWM, NETCA, NETMGR, DBCA, OUI installer, etc) from our UNIX/Linux machine with display redirected or forwarded to another workstation, the tool starts but it hangs (the application window does not appear, does not refresh or is not drawn correctly) or crashes with errors related to fonts, like the following:

$ owm
        at sun.awt.motif.X11FontMetrics.<init>(
        at sun.awt.motif.X11FontMetrics.getFontMetrics(
        at sun.awt.motif.MToolkit.getFontMetrics(
        at java.awt.Component.getFontMetrics(

X display is being forwarded (e.g. through SSH tunneling) or directed to another machine, usually a Windows workstation.
