Symptoms

While creating a database, Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) gives the following message (pop-up), even though there is a good running ASM instance on each node of the RAC cluster:

DBCA could not startup the ASM instance configured on
this node. To proceed with teh database creation using
ASM you need the ASM instance to be up and running.
Do you want to recreate the ASM instance on this node?
                                                                 [Yes]   [No]

The above is given as soon as "Automatic Storage Management ASM)" was selected as the storage mechanism that will be used for the database (Database Configuration Assistant, Step 7 of 17 : Storage Options), and after one clicks on the Next button.
