runInstaller -invPtrLoc $ORACLE_HOME/oraInst.loc gives error You do not have permission to write to the inventory /opt/oracle/app/oracle/oraInventory. Installation cannot continue.: Permission denied" (Doc ID 562699.1)

Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 9.2.0.1 and later   [Release: 9.2 and later ]
Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit)

Symptoms

  • Default /var/opt/oracle/oraInst.loc is present
  • You do not have write access to the default oraInventory (refered by /var/opt/oracle/oraInst.loc in inventory_loc key) 
  • A new Oracle Home is being created using
    % runInstaller -invPtrLoc $ORACLE_HOME/oraInst.loc 
  •  OUI version is less than 2.2.2.6.0

    OUI will fail with the following error :

You do not have permission to write to the inventory <path to inventory>/oraInventory. Installation cannot continue.: Permission denied
