Last updated on MARCH 28, 2019

Applies to:

Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 10.2.0.3 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.
This problem can occur on any platform.

Symptoms

This issue was observed on Oracle 10.2.0.2 on a HP Tru64 server

Scenario:
Two databases, for example database A and database B, are involved.
The A database has views with a database link to tables in the B database.
A front end application sends a query to the A database to read data from the B database through the views in A. This may be done many times successfully.
However, on occasion, a core dump occurs, and when this happens, the application will not process any more queries; it must be restarted. The front end application will also return erroneous data.

The alert log may show these errors:
ORA-07445: exception encountered: core dump [unknown] [SIGSEGV] [Address not mapped to object]
[0x80D0515C4] [] []

The function stack indicates the error occurred while converting a number to a character string.
