RDBPROD: Why is Maximum Column Name Length 29 in SQL/Services and ODBC? (Doc ID 64838.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 09, 2018

Applies to:

Oracle Rdb Server on OpenVMS - Version 5.0 and later
Oracle SQL/Services for Rdb on OpenVMS - Version 6.0 and later
HP OpenVMS VAX
HP OpenVMS Itanium
HP OpenVMS Alpha

Goal

ODBC and SQL/Services will truncate column names over 29 characters in length to 29 characters.  For example a column named

    THIS_IS_THIRTY_CHARACTERS_LONG

will be truncated to

     THIS_IS_THIRTY_CHARACTERS_LON<xx>

where xx is the NULL byte terminator.

Rdb allows column names up to 31 characters in length.

Why is the column name truncated?
