RDBPROD: When You Should Back Up Your AIJ Journal vs Add a New Journal (Doc ID 65138.1)

Last updated on APRIL 14, 2022

Applies to:

Oracle Rdb Server on OpenVMS - Version 6.0 and later
HP OpenVMS VAX
HP OpenVMS Itanium
HP OpenVMS Alpha

Purpose

Starting with Oracle Rdb V6.0, it is possible for your database to become suspended when using the circular after-image journal feature. Database suspension is caused when AIJ journal switch-over is unable to switch to an available journal file, because all existing journal files are either unavailable or have not been backed up. All existing journal files are unavailable.

Once your database has been suspended, you must either back up one or more of the existing journal files or add a new journal in order to allow journal switch-over to continue. If the backup or addition is not performed within the DBA specified length of time (by default, 60 minutes), the database will shutdown and must be recovered.
