Alter Database Open Generates ORA-07445 [memcpy()+40] (Doc ID 728341.1)

Symptoms

After upgrading from 9i to 10g while opening the database there is a core dump. The alert log shows:

Errors in file /optware/oracle/admin/OLIP1/udump/olip1_ora_32359.trc:
ORA-07445: exception encountered: core dump [memcpy()+40] [SIGSEGV] [Address not mapped to object] [0x000000000] [] []

 The trace file shows:
