NFS disks with HEADER_STATUS of UNKNOWN (in V$ASM_DISK)

(Doc ID 731412.1)

Last updated on APRIL 29, 2009

Applies to:

Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 10.1.0.2 to 11.1.0.6
This problem can occur on any platform.

Symptoms

ASM does discover NFS disks but no diskgroup can be created with them:

CREATE DISKGROUP DATAGRP3 EXTERNAL REDUNDANCY DISK '/n01/oradata'
*
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-15018: diskgroup cannot be created
ORA-15072: command requires at least 1 failure groups, discovered only 0

From the ASM instance, the NFS devices are been discovered but still these cannot be used to create a diskgroup, even if the NFS device's owner:group and file permissions allow the Oracle software owner to access them (example: oracle:oinstall and 660).

v$ASM_DISK shows for the NFS disk, HEADER_STATUS of UNKNOWN, MOUNT_STATUS of CLOSED, MODE_STATUS of ONLINE and STATE of NORMAL

Using certified NFS storage vendor (in this case, NetApps NFS)
