Real Application Clusters (RAC) Automatic Storage Management (ASM) Instances Crash With ORA-29702 When Multiple ASM Instances Start(ed) (Doc ID 733262.1)

Symptoms

On a new RAC installation, 1) cannot startup all 3 ASM instances or 2) if these are started, they
(or some ASM instances) do crash.

1) If attempting to restart an ASM instance:

    From srvctl, it gives

$ ./srvctl start asm -n <NODE_NAME1>
PRKS-1009 : Failed to start ASM instance "+ASM2" on node "<NODE_NAME1>", [PRKS-
1009 : Failed to start ASM instance "+ASM2" on node "<NODE_NAME1>", [CRS-0215:
Could not start resource 'ora.<NODE_NAME1>.ASM2.asm'.]]
[PRKS-1009 : Failed to start ASM instance "+ASM2" on node "<NODE_NAME1>", [CRS-
0215: Could not start resource 'ora.<NODE_NAME1>.ASM2.asm'.]]


    From sqlplus, it gives:

SQL> startup
ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel



2) The alert log for any of the ASM instance that crash, shows:

ORA-29702: error occurred in Cluster Group Service operation
LMON: terminating instance due to error 29702

.
