ORA-936 Missing Expression Trying to Perform Outer Join Using Lower Function (Doc ID 740708.1)

Trying to run a query using an outer join and the lower function.

The following example is using the scott.emp table,

SQL> insert into emp values(1234, 'abcd', 'CLERK','7788', to_date('03-JAN-98'),1111, 0, 10);

The following query returns the ORA-936 error:

SQL> SELECT e.ename
FROM emp e, dept d
WHERE e.deptno (+) = d.deptno
AND lower (e.ename) (+) = 'abcd';
AND lower (e.ename) (+) = 'abcd'
*
ERROR at line 4:
ORA-00936: missing expression
