Using HSODBC - DG4ODBC Error - MySQL Server Has Gone Away

Symptoms

When querying MYSQL tables via HSODBC or DG4ODBC, an error can occur or results may not be complete :

ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
[Generic Connectivity Using ODBC][unixODBC][MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver][mysqld-5.0.24a]MySQL server has gone away (SQL State: S1T00; SQL Code: 2006)
ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from MYSQL_SERVER

 or

ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
[Generic Connectivity Using ODBC][unixODBC][MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver][mysqld-5.0.24a]Lost connection to MySQL server during query (SQL State: 08S01; SQL
