This error could happen on other versions nor discussed here.

Symptoms

ORA-00204: error in reading (block 31, #blocks 64) of control file
ORA-00202: control file: '/../../control01.ctl'
-or-
ORA-01114: IO error writing block to file 23 (block # 97263)

Then end with an error like the following:

Ora-27072: file i/o error
Hpux-ia64 Error: 22: Invalid argument
additional information: 4
additional information: xxxx
additional information: -1
