Rac Standby Instance Crash Due To Ora-04031 (Asm Extent Pointer Array) (Doc ID 756095.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 04, 2018

Applies to:

Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: and later   [Release: 10.2 and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

The following symptoms have been attributed to this issue :-

a) The following error is seen in the alert log :-

ORA-4031: unable to allocate 3912 bytes of shared memory ("shared pool","unknown object","sga heap(1,1)","ASM extent pointer array")

The number of bytes that cannot be allocated is not known to be unique, the chunk however must be "ASM extent pointer array" for this article to be considered.

b) The environment is RAC related with not all of the instances open.  At least one of the instances
within the environment must be MOUNTED.  If all instances are open the article is not considered
appropriate.  The error is also linked to ASM/Standby environments.

Further rediscovery information is not trivial due to the root cause of the base bug (see below)
