How to add User Defined Coordinate Systems using a traditional insert into MDSYS.CS_SRS in 10gR2 and 11g? (Doc ID 788145.1)

Last updated on DECEMBER 25, 2019

Oracle Spatial and Graph - Version to [Release 10.2 to 11.1]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Creating a user-defined coordinate system before 10g Release2 (V10.2) has been done via inserting a row with the Open Geospatial Consortium Well-Known Text (OGC WKT) into the MDSYS.CS_SRS table. As of V10.2 onwards, coordinate system support is based upon the European Petroleum Survey Group (EPSG) model which is implemented using different table structures.

For more information about this new implementation please see for example:
Spatial User's Guide and Reference 10g Release 2

The EPSG model is more flexible, but it is also more complicated to add a new User Defined Coordinate System as it requires inserts into multiple tables.
