Getting ORA-01017 Error While Connecting To Database System User Using Sqlplus (Doc ID 803253.1)

-- Problem Statement:
Getting error while connecting to database with sqlplus at the first attempt with correct password.
But getting connection with second attempt. Please see below for details

$ sqlplus system/tea4_$three
SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.2.0 - Production on Thu Mar 26 13:37:31 2009
ERROR:
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

Enter user-name: system/tea4_$three
Connected to:
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining options
