OSB Reported error in transcript - unrecoverable error (OB scsi device driver)
(Doc ID 863047.1)
Last updated on NOVEMBER 02, 2019
Applies to:Oracle Secure Backup - Version 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3 [Release 10.2]
Information in this document applies to any platform.
This problem can occur on any platform.
If Oracle Secure Backup (OSB) reports an unrecoverable error by the device during an operation, the user should investigate the situation to determine if the media (tape) is bad or the drive is problematic. The error was communicated to OSB by the tape device, which could not perform the operation so OSB temporally takes the device out of service. The media will remain in the device. Since the error could relate to a bad tape or a problem drive, OSB will NOT take the tape out of rotation or permanently disable the drive for use. If the user does not investigate the error, a potentially bad tape will stay in rotation available for use. Upon next attempt to use the tape, the same errors will be generated, thereby slowing slow the backup process until a good tape comes up in rotation.
OSB reports error messages in the transcript such as these relating to media errors:
Hostname - VolumeID - <name>
pass 0 - trying to automount loaded volume
beginning pass 1
admin/27640.1: 2009/04/01.23:41:31 (ial) invalidate backup image label (was valid)
admin/27640.1: 2009/04/01.23:46:25 (pvfw) space to EOD failed - unrecoverable error (OB scsi device driver)
admin/27640.1: 2009/04/01.23:52:33 (pvfw) space failed - unrecoverable error (OB scsi device driver)
These are not OSB media write errors. There are unrecoverable errors being reported by the device. Either bad media or a device error could cause the error. To investigate further, review the device logs which in this situation reported:
<host_name> - <Volume_ID> - <name>
beginning pass 1
