Symptoms

You are using Instant Client ODBC Driver or Full Client ODBC Driver and getting garbled / junk / corrupt characters in drop down list for TNS Service name. You have set TNS_ADMIN in the registry to your ORACLE_HOME path where your tnsnames.ora resides.

Another possible reason for encountering the garbage / junk characters is as follows:

If you have not set TNS_ADMIN in the registry but instead as an environment variable and still see this problem then you may have a tnsnames.ora file with an appended .txt extension that may not be realized.
