Purpose

This document is intended to help in resolving the most common reasons for ORA-12500/TNS-12500 errors on OpenVMS in Oracle 9.2 and up. Much of the information also applies to versions of Oracle on OpenVMS going back to 7.3.3, but this document concentrates on newer versions.

This  article does not include Oracle Names Server problems, it is only based  on systems that make connections using TNSNAMES.ORA.

The intended audience is Oracle personnel, and Oracle customers who encounter this error.
